“I just have a fantastic memory about the day Granny Harron arrived at my door August 1959 and just said there's something I want to show you. She took me out to the house in which she was born(no longer there) and showed me the well where they got the water which was still in use then. Told me about her father working as a farm labourer in the big house on the hill which I believe is still lived in and her memories of going to Glenock Chapel when there wasn't any seats on the ground floor just in the gallery and her father paid 1shilling annually to have a seat?? I presume that's what eventually paid for the seats on the floor.   So meaningful that my children and some grandchildren were christened at the same baptismal font as our granny.  We visited the school which she attended and which my family also attended up until 1970 when our new school was built. It became an oratory then and has since been replaced with a chapel. She asked me if she could bring her brother Patrick up and he came a few weeks later and shared some memories too.  One of his memories was how they waved over to kids across the street at lunchtime this was the old model school which is now the library. Should have also said how much they enjoyed walking over the old bridge too as they would have done as children.”

The painting is one Pat did of a view from her house in Castle Brae. That’s the old bridge that Granny Harron and her brother Patrick would have walked across going to school. Glenock Chapel is in the background as is Crosh House where great-granda James French worked (it’s the house in the distance with 3 chimneys).
It’s a wonderful capture of a big piece of our family history.
